See also the Car costs categories calculator.

One of the most important financial decisions deals with which car we should drive, if any at all. Few people know how much driving costs because these costs are difficult to estimate. Especially the variable car costs are difficult to estimate mainly because people do not exactly know how much they drive. The computation is not difficult but still lengthy, too lengthy to do without a computer. Neither do most people know for which purpose they drive, for business or private purposes, which is usually also an important factor in decision making.

With this calculator you can estimate how much you drive and how many miles are for private purposes and how many miles for business purposes. You will also get an estimate of the variable costs, including garage costs, fines, parking costs, and fuel. In addition the computation keeps track of which variable costs are made for business purposes and which costs are private.

The results are displayed per day, week, month and per year. The results for the daily and the weekly costs are both averages of the corresponding two input columns, "per day" and "per week". For the input columns "per day" and "per week" you can specify the number of weeks or months in which the costs are spent below "Business travel" and "Private travel". The results in the column "per day" and "per week" are averages over the number of days and weeks specified here.

The results below the column "per month" are the 12-months averages over the values in the first three input columns, per day, per week and per month. The results for the column "per year" are based on input from all four columns.

In this way it is possible to compute the costs of many regular commutes. For example enter the daily and weekly travel to your work in the columns "per day" and "per week" and specify 49 weeks below "Business travel" if you have three weeks vacation. This computes the daily and weekly cost price of the commutes to your work. The averages in the column "per day" are calculated over the number of days you are actually driving for work instead over all days. The averages in the column "per week" are computed over the number of weeks you are actually driving for work instead over all weeks. In the column "per month" the average monthly costs of the work travel are displayed, this average is taken over 12 months.

Similarly it is also possible to compute the daily and weekly cost price of private travel. For instance enter holiday travel in the column "per year". If you take your kids to school three days per week, 46 weeks per year, enter the 3 days per week during 46 weeks below "Private travel". Enter the daily distance to school in the column "per day". Add an estimate of the private travel during the weekends and below the column "per day" you will find the average daily costs that include the weekend travel and the daily commutes to school. The daily average is computed over the days you actually bring your kids to school instead over all days. Likewise, in the column "per week" you will find the average weekly travel, where the average is calculated over 46 weeks. In the column per month and per year you will find the car costs per month (12-month average) and per year.
